The Quilts of Valor group meets at Loving Stitches several times each month to sew quilts for wounded and injured soldiers from the Global War on Terror. We have found a pattern that is simple string piecing -- a quick and simple technique for sewers of any skill level -- so any cotton fabric strips can be used. The string pieced fabric is then cut into star shapes and the resulting quilt is very patriotic! The soldiers, we have learned, particularly like BLUE so BLUE DONATIONS ARE ESPECIALLY APPRECIATED!
Quilts of Valor is NOT about making quilts to hang in quilt shows. It's not about politics. It's not about quilts made by the military for the military. While it includes the military -- active duty, retired, veterans, reservists, family members -- it is much larger than that. It is about AMERICANS, people who want to say "thank you" and honor the men and women who have sacrificed and bravely gone in harms way for our country. It is about making quilts that will immediately be anonymously be given to a wounded or injured service member by a military Chaplain. The quilts are given in love from the Americans who in some way contributed or helped make them.
The official drop-off point for materials of quilts meant for Quilts of Valor in our area is Loving Stitches.
Project Linus is a non-profit organization that aims to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers." Blankets made within our area go to places such as Womack Hospital and the Fisher House. You can help this worthy cause by donating new, handmade blankets, fabrics, or your time. For more information about Project Linus, please visit their website www.projectlinus.org.
Each year, Loving Stitches supports BERNINA who has teamed up with the American Heart Association to help find a cure for the #1 killer of women in the U.S.
When you hear the term "heart disease," what is your first reaction? Like many women, you may think, "That's a man's disease." But here's the truth: Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the United States. It is also a leading cause of disability among women. If you've got a heart, heart disease could be your problem.
The good news: Heart disease is a problem you can do something about.
